Why do colleges offer free ride scholarships? What is the advantage to the school?

If it's for an athlete, the answer is obvious: money. A talented athlete increases the college team's chances of winning, and there is a TON of money to be made from having a winning team. Whatever the college spends on giving that athlete a full ride, they'll make WAY more back. The college is wagering that they'll earn a huge return on their investment.
