Home Loan vs Home Equity Loan?

We have an opportunity to buy or receive as a gift my husband's parents house. It needs a lot of work and additional rooms. Would it better to buy it out right with enough to remodel or receive it as a gift and get a home equity loan for the remodel? We are property virgins!
